বিদ্রোহী - an annotated translation
বিদ্রোহী (Bidrohi - “The Rebel”) is one of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s most famous poems. He wrote it in 1921, when he was 22 years old. The title of the poem became a nickname of Nazrul himself. Like much of his work, this poem deals with the theme of fighting against injustice, closely linked to India’s struggle for independence from the British (Nazrul was arrested by British authorities in 1923 for his writing). In Bidrohi, Nazrul draws heavily on concepts and imagery from both Hindu and Muslim traditions, entwined with vivid descriptions of nature and love. It’s truly an amazing and powerful piece.
I really, really recommend listening to a recitation of this poem. Hearing the poem with the proper cadence and emotion really helps one appreciate Nazrul’s craftmanship. Here is one recitation (the first section of the video) by Nazrul’s son, Kazi Sabyasachi. Here is another one by Tito Munshi.

There are already some nice translations available online, for example this by Kabir Chowdhury and this by Sajed Kamal. I used these a great deal for guidance, although I tended to be a bit more literal than both in my translating. I translated line-by-line, trying my best to understand the meaning of every single word. I have included links on individual words to entries in online Bengali dictionaries. I have also included links to webpages to give context for certain cultural and religious terms.
This translation took me a bit longer than anticipated, but the process was very enriching. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how this turned out - as far as I know, there is no translation easily found online that’s as comprehensive as this one (although there may still be some issues with mine). I plan to write a follow-up post with my analysis on a few selected lines.
Without further ado, I present my translation of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Bidrohi.
