A song by Kazi Nazrul Islam

Here is a short song by Nazrul that I like. You can listen to a nice rendition by the Bangladeshi singer Firoza Begum (1930-2014) below.

For the lyrics, I’m referring to my copy of কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের নির্বাচিত রচনা সংগ্রহ​ (Collection of Selected Works of Kazi Nazrul Islam), ed. Ajharuddin Khan (p. 142-143). I’ve kept the stanza breakdown and indentation as it appears in this book.

The translation is my own, without any underlying reference other than the online dictionary. If I realize I’ve misunderstood something, I will try to come back and correct it.

আমি যার নুপুরের ছন্দ​,
                বেণুকার সুর ​-
                কে সেই সুন্দর কে ।
That beauty, of whose anklets I am the rhythm,
Of whose flute I am the tune -
Who is that beauty? Who? 

আমি যার বিলাস-যমুনা
                 বিরহ বিধুর​ -
                 কে সেই সুন্দর কে ॥
That beauty, to whom I am the pleasing Yamuna River,
To whom I am the affliction of separation - 
Who is that beauty? Who? 

যাহার গানের আমি বন-মালা, 
আমি যার কথার কুসুম-ডালা
                       না দেখা সুদূর - 
               কে সেই সুন্দর কে ॥ 
That beauty, of whose songs I am a garland of wildflowers,
Of whose stories I am a basket of blossoms,
That beauty, who is distant and unseen - 
Who is that beauty? Who? 

যার শিখী-পাখা লেখনী হয়ে 
      গোপনে মোরে কবিতা লেখায় 
                     সে রহে কোথায় হায়! 
That beauty, whose peacock-feather pen I have become, 
Writing poetry in secrecy,
O, Where is that secret? 

আমি যার বরষার আনন্দ-কেকা 
নৃতের​ সঙ্গিনী দামিনী-লেখা । 
যে মম অঙ্গে কাঁকন কেয়ূর, 
               কে সেই সুন্দর কে ॥ 
That beauty, of whose rainfalls I am the blissful peacock's call,
Whose dance I accompany with the lightning of my writing,
That beauty which is the bracelet and armlet on my arm,
Who is that beauty? Who?
